Privacy

This site sets no cookies, stores nothing on your device, and does not track you across other sites. It counts visits, because knowing which parts of the atlas people actually use is how it gets better. That is the whole of it.

What is recorded

Visits are measured with Umami, a privacy-focused analytics service. For each page view it records:

• the page address you visited, and the site you arrived from, if any;
• your browser, operating system, device type and screen size;
• an approximate location derived from your IP address — country, region and city;
• which parts of the atlas were used: a city opened, the time of year moved, the map layer switched. Never the text you type into the search box.

What is not recorded

• No cookies and no local storage are used for analytics. Instead of storing an identifier on your device, Umami derives a temporary one on its own servers from your IP address and browser, mixed with a secret that changes every day. Your IP address is used for that calculation and to estimate your location, and is then discarded — it is never stored.
• Because that identifier changes daily, you cannot be recognised as the same visitor tomorrow, and there is no profile of you to build.
• No advertising, no advertising networks, no tracking across other websites, and no sale or sharing of anything with anyone for their own purposes.

The atlas does save your own settings — the layer you chose, the last view — in your browser's local storage. That never leaves your device and is not analytics.

Why, and on what legal basis

The purpose is aggregate audience measurement: how many people visit, which pages and which features get used. The legal basis is legitimate interest under Article 6(1)(f) GDPR — running and improving a site whose audience is measured in a way that stores nothing on your device and builds no profile. Because nothing is stored on or read from your device, no consent banner is required under Article 5(3) of the ePrivacy Directive.

Who processes it, and where

Umami Software, Inc. (San Francisco, United States) acts as our data processor under a data processing agreement, and processes the data on infrastructure in the European Union and the United States. Transfers outside the EEA are covered by the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses. Umami publishes its list of subprocessors and its data processing agreement.

How long it is kept

Analytics data is retained for 13 months and then deleted. Nothing is retained that could identify you individually at any point.

Your rights

Under the GDPR you have the right to access, correct, erase, restrict, port and object to the processing of your personal data, and to complain to your national data protection authority.

One honest caveat: because the visitor identifier is temporary and cannot be traced back to a person, we hold nothing that can be linked to you. That means we genuinely cannot find "your" data in order to show or delete it, and Article 11 GDPR does not require us to collect more information about you in order to become able to. If you would rather not be counted at all, any content blocker will stop the script, and the atlas works exactly the same without it.
